Although labeled a spin-off due to contractual pressure from Sony, the Sega Dreamcast exclusive Resident Evil Code Veronica was originally designed as the true sequel to Resident Evil 2. The title "Resident Evil 3" was given to what was originally another spin-off game being developed in tandem for the PlayStation (Nemesis).
Code Veronica was the first Resident Evil game to use fully 3D environments, as opposed to the typical pre-rendered backgrounds of earlier games. It was also the first to take place outside of the USA, with the action happening on a European gothic island (and later, Antarctica).
Up to the time of the game's release, no Resident Evil game before it had achieved such high quality graphics, which included models utilizing over 2,500 polygons each, and zombie animations that included facial twitches and moving jaws.
